Stadium:
Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center
The Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center, usually called simply the Dean Smith Center and popularly referred to as the Dean Dome is a multi-purpose arena in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It is home to the University of North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball team. The arena opened in 1986. It is named after former UNC coach Dean Smith, who coached at UNC from 1961 to 1997. According to David Halberstam's biography of Michael Jordan, Smith did not want the arena named after him, but was persuaded by the UNC administration and the arena's backers that fundraising efforts for the facility could fail if they did not use his name.

Team History:
North Carolina has enjoyed long success as one of the top basketball programs in the country. Overall, the Tar Heels have won five men's basketball titles: four NCAA championships and one Helms title. In 1924 the team went 26-0 in an era with no official national championship. In the mid-1930s, the school was retroactively awarded a national championship by the Helms Athletic Foundation, an independent organization founded around that time in Los Angeles. Under coach Frank McGuire, the team won its first NCAA championship in 1957. After McGuire left, legendary coach Dean Smith established the team as a powerhouse in college basketball. While coaching for UNC for over thirty years, Smith set the record for the most wins of any men's college basketball head coach, a record broken in 2007 by Bob Knight. Under Smith, the Tar Heels won two national championships and had numerous talented players come through the program. More recently, the Tar Heels won the national championship in 2005 under coach Roy Williams.

Season Preview:
North Carolina awarded coach Roy Williams a four-year contract extension Thursday that will keep him with the Tar Heels through the 2014-15 season. Williams, who signed an eight-year contract to coach his alma mater before the 2003-04 season, will make up to $1.8 million each year plus incentives based on the Tar Heels' performance on the court and in the classroom. "Roy Williams is the most complete coach in the country," athletic director Dick Baddour said. "I knew when we hired him he was an outstanding basketball coach, but he has also exceeded our every expectation in the manner in which he runs a basketball program. He believes in character first, he coaches for all the right reasons and he is a first-rate ambassador of our university."
