Stadium: Mizzou Arena
Mizzou Arena is an indoor arena on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. The facility, home to the school's men's and women's basketball teams, opened in November 2004 and replaced the Hearnes Center as the school's main indoor sports facility. The arched-roof building seats 15,061, and is located just south of Hearnes and Memorial Stadium. The arena also is host to Missouri State High School Activities Association championships for basketball & wrestling.
Mizzou Arena is double-decked on three sides (the sidelines and the west baseline) and has a single large bleacher section on the east end, where student groups (such as the main "Zou Crew", Student Athletic Board, and the smaller, more infamous "Antlers") stand, as well as the pep band. Seats in the south stand, lower level are fully cushioned theatre-style seats and are sold to the members of the Tiger Scholarship Fund club, the main fund-raising arm for the school. There are roughly 35 luxury boxes between the lower and upper levels, offering full food and drink service, televisions and other comforts. The arena has a wider variety of both concession stands and food choices than Hearnes did, and has a large Tiger Team Store outlet.
Team History:
The Missouri Tigers athletics programs include the extramural and intramural sports teams of the University of Missouri–Columbia. The name comes from a band armed guards called the Missouri Tigers who, in 1854, protected Columbia from Confederate guerrillas during the Civil War. The University of Missouri–Columbia (often referred to as simply the University of Missouri, Mizzou, Missouri, or MU) is the flagship institution of the University of Missouri System. The women's teams are sometimes called the Lady Tigers, but often both the men's and women's teams are simply called the Tigers. Mizzou is a member of the Big 12 Conference and is the only NCAA Division I-A program in Missouri.
Season Preview:
Gary Pinkel's Tigers burst onto the national scene last year. The trick is to stay there all season, a feat they hope to accomplish in 2007.
Mizzou won its first six games last year and peaked at No. 19 in the national polls as observers around the country buzzed about the team's record-setting offense. But the Tigers stubbed their toes at Texas A&M and went on to lose four of the next five games to fall off the radar screen of the big bowl scouts. They sewed up a Sun Bowl berth with a rout of Kansas, then lost a shootout to Oregon State in El Paso.
This year, the Tigers return the majority of the players from the No. 8 offense in the country (425.6 yards per game) -- in fact, virtually all of the skill players are back, with 98 percent of the offensive yards returning this year. They've finished second in the Big 12 North the last three seasons, but with mighty Nebraska coming back to the pack a bit, the Tigers are gunning for their first conference title since 1969. They also can go to a third straight bowl game for the first time since 1979-81.
