Season Preview:
Rich Rodriguez will never come out and talk about how good his football team is but others are doing it for him. West Virginia is a Top 5 team in the eyes of many who do the predicting and should be; the Mountaineers lost virtually nothing from their skill positions list of stars. They had nine players make either first or second team All Big East last season and seven of them are back. Toward the end of last season, the West Virginia offense showed a more dangerous side, the ability to pass the ball. So, now, you really can't only watch the running of Patrick White and Steve Slaton; this team is figuring out ways to beat you through the air, too. There's not a better 1-2 combination in the country than White and Slaton. Rodriguez was unhappy with his offense at one point in camp, but thought it performed better in the spring game. West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez says his team will fashion some different looks on the defensive side of the ball, which doesn't get a whole lot of respect from people on the outside. West Virginia was No. 1 in the Big East in rushing defense last year but was also dead last against the pass, yielding 243.3 yards per game. That number can be a bit misleading, of course, because teams had to pass to try to catch up to this team, but it's still an area of concern. PK Pat McAfee is as dependable as they come and still has two years left. The return game is led by the dynamic Darius Reynaud and Vaughn Rivers, both among the leaders in the conference.
