Season Preview:
With 19 starters returning, the Cavaliers look to take a major step up and perhaps compete for the Coastal Division title and their first berth in the ACC championship game. The key to that could be their Sept. 22 meeting in Charlottesville against Georgia Tech, which follows games against Wyoming, Duke, and North Carolina. They finish the season at Miami on Nov. 10 and against Virginia Tech at home on Nov. 24. The offense lost a major contributor when WR Kevin Ogletree sustained a knee injury and will sit out the 2007 season. Ogletree caught 52 passes as a sophomore last season. The Cavaliers return QB Jameel Sewell, TEs Tom Santi and Jonathan Stupar, and five starters in the offensive line, but will be looking for a replacement for TB Jason Snelling. Junior Cedric Peerman will be No. 1 going into the fall but faces challenges from redshirt freshmen Keith Payne and Raynard Horne. All seven starters return in Virginia's 3-4 front led by DE Chris Long. There are questions in the secondary despite the return of three starters. Senior Jamaal Jackson pushed returning senior starter Nate Lyles for one of the starting safety spots. Senior CB Chris Cook is considered an all-ACC candidate. Both senior PK-P Chris Gould, who held off a challenge from senior Noah Greenbaum in the spring, and senior P Ryan Weigand return. Gould handled both jobs until midseason, when Weigand took over the punting. Gould still retained responsibility for punts inside the 50-yard line. Peerman (kickoffs) and junior Mike Brown (punts) are the return men.
