Season Preview:
It's hard to get a read on what will happen to this UConn team in the fall. One of three Big East teams not to go to a bowl game in 2006, Randy Edsall's team endured all kinds of off-field headaches and the product reflected the turmoil. But they also found a star running back in Donald Brown, who took the Big East by storm and leads his team (in at least name recognition) as it tries to make some headway in a very tough (and small, which doesn't help you move up) conference. The non-league slate is manageable, starting with a very winnable game at Duke. The numbers are there: the Huskies were seventh in the eight-team league in total offense and have brought in junior college quarterback Tyler Lorenzen to provide a passing attack that complements Donald Brown. The running back will get all kinds of attention if UConn can't pass the football. The Huskies were last in the Big East in scoring defense and sixth in rushing defense, which was more than offset by placing second in the conference in pass defense. Linebacker Danny Lansanah and speedy cornerbacks Darius Butler and Tyvon Branch lead a group of defenders that shouldn't get trampled and may do some good things. As of spring ball, it was still a mess, and there was a chance recruit Dave Teggart can walk in and become the starting kicker. Tony Ciaravino and Desi Cullen did the kicking and punting in the spring game, with Cullem making his only field goal (30) and averaging 41.2 yards on five punts. His numbers were much better than Ciaravino. Led by Larry Taylor, the Huskies were second in the Big East in punt returns and fourth in kickoff returns last year, and all the parties are back.
