Season Preview:
It could be Texas Tech is on a slide. The Red Raiders needed a monumental comeback last season to beat Minnesota in overtime at the Insight Bowl and salvage a winning season. Now, with the majority of starters on both units departed, the Red Raiders face a massive rebuilding job that may not bode well against formidable opponents in the Big 12 South. Although Texas Tech does have a starting quarterback, Graham Harrell, in place, the Red Raiders must replace all but four offensive starters, including all but one linemen. This could be one of the more difficult rebuilding jobs thus far for Mike Leach, who enters his eighth season as Texas Tech coach. Leach is convinced his overall receiving corps could be better than last season, though Harrell must perfect a quick release to compensate for the turnover among his blockers. Texas Tech appears thin up front after getting hurt by graduation and the departure of Dan'Tay Ward. Although NG Clint Stoffels was impressive during the spring, the Red Raiders can't rely too heavily on such walk-ons. The strides made under coordinator Lyle Setencich have been impressive, though Tech will be counting on several unproven defenders after losing all but five starters. Experienced return men, coupled with the presence of senior PK Alex Trlica, could give the Red Raiders an edge on several specialty units. Trlica's confidence should be at an all-time high after his 52-yard field goal at the end of regulation forced the overtime in Tech's win over Minnesota at the Insight Bowl. Trlica's 166 consecutive PATs is an NCAA record.
