Season Preview:
Is there any reason for optimism at the Carrier Dome? For the first five games of last season, Syracuse looked like a team that might be a real pain for the rest of the season. But there would be only one victory the rest of the way as the team limped home to a 4-8 record. They were seventh or eighth in an eight-team conference in far too many categories and even the ever-optimistic Robinson had to be thinking about what was going on. Better in 2007? We'll see. The Orange was last in the Big East in scoring offense, total offense and rushing offense and seventh in passing offense. The main reason was an offensive line that lived a true nightmare. Perry Patterson wasn't bad at quarterback and there were some strong individual performances, but Patterson's done and the Orange suffered a huge blow when sophomore-to-be running back Delone Carter dislocated a hip in spring practice and had surgery. He's not expected back to help an offense that will apparently be led by QB Andrew Robinson and bolstered by the return of Taj Smith. As low as the Orange ranked in the offensive categories, the defensive side of the ball wasn't much better. Defensive end Jameel McClain was second team All Big East, but you have to wonder if he has enough help to improve the 2006 defensive numbers. Greg Robinson gave up his defensive coordinator duties. Robinson won't be working with the defense, but will be with the special teams, which lost punter Brandon Carney but still has kicker Patrick Shadle. Curtis Brinkley averaged 21.3 yards per kickoff return in 2006.
