Season Preview:
After going 15-10 and earning two bowl invitations in two seasons under coach Steve Spurrier, the Gamecocks return 10 defensive starters and a better sense of what they need to do to win after losing to Auburn, Tennessee, Arkansas and Florida by a combined 21 points last year. If the defense continues to keep the Gamecocks in games they'll need better play from the offense and special teams to beat Georgia, LSU, Tennessee and Arkansas on the road this year. Senior QB Blake Mitchell has spent most of the past two seasons in and out of Spurrier's doghouse and remains on a short leash, but he's hardly the biggest or only problem facing the offense. Spurrier spent the 2006 season testing various combinations on the offensive line before the line finally made progress late in the season. All of that returning experience should make the Gamecocks better up front. But the line struggled throughout the spring, particularly in pass protection. The passing game must also replace WR Sidney Rice, so TBs Cory Boyd and Mike Davis better be prepared to carry the load. After opening the 2006 season with 10 new starters the Gamecocks now enter the 2007 season with 10 returning starters as well as LB Dustin Lindsey, a former starter who sat out the 2006 season. Senior MLB Jasper Brinkley is the key to the defense. His twin brother Casper started at defensive end last season but spent most the spring at weak-side linebacker, where he struggled in pass protection. If he can't make the transition he might have to share playing time at end with freshman All-American Eric Norwood, Juco transfer Jonathan Williams and true freshman Travian Robertson. Even though the only departing starter is CB Fred Bennett and Carlos Thomas, Stoney Woodson and Captain Munnerlyn all bring starting experience, the secondary still has a lot to prove. After failures in the kicking game hurt the Gamecocks in close games, Spurrier promised to take a more active role in the kicking game and hired Shane Beamer, the son of Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer, as special teams co-coordinator. Ryan Succop was an effective punter and kicker last season but the Gamecocks must do a better job preventing big plays and start making a few of their own.
