Season Preview:
With 15 starters back from a squad that showed significant improvement over the latter half of the 2006 season, Northwestern has the look of a team that could fight for a bowl berth this fall. Of course, it helps that the Wildcats open with home games against Northeastern, Nevada and Duke -- and face Eastern Michigan at Detroit's Ford Field in the middle of the year. In QB C.J. Bacher and TB Tyrell Sutton, the Wildcats boast the experience and talent in the backfield necessary to make the team's spread offense work. Now, if one of the players in NU's loaded receiving corps replaces the graduated Shaun Herbert as the go-to guy in clutch situations, then the Wildcats have all the components to become an above-average offense again -- like in the Brett Basanez days. Northwestern's defense never quite figured things out last year. The Wildcats switched between 4-3 and 3-4 defensive fronts. They alternately struggled against the run and the pass. They battled injuries to several key players. This time around, NU believes it has the makings of a solid defensive line and secondary. If the Cats can find a revelation or two at linebacker -- oft-injured Chris Jeske, perhaps? -- they could develop into something decent. Northwestern lost its kicker and punter to graduation and didn't find any obvious answers during spring ball. Redshirt freshman Stefan Demos has the pedigree to win both jobs, but he's going to battle juniors Amado Villarreal and Kyle Daley for those jobs all summer and fall. The Wildcats do retain last year's regular kick returner (Sherrick McManis) and punt returner (Brendan Smith). They're solid guys with moderate big-play capability.
