Vaught Hemingway Stadium
More than 50,000 fans gather to form a sea of red. They let out a collective roar and chant “Hotty Toddy” as the Rebels take the field for another heavyweight college football game on a brisk Saturday afternoon in the fall. Such is the norm at the historic Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, which is located on the southeast side of the University of Mississippi campus. The stadium increased its capacity to 60,580 in 2002 with the bowling in of the south end zone, making it the largest facility in the state.

Season Preview:
A 7-16 record over the past two years puts the pressure on third-year coach Ed Orgeron and his staff to start showing some tangible progress, but the situation might not be as discouraging as it might seem on the surface. The Rebels lost four SEC games late in the season by a combined 17 points and now they return 17 starters, 47 letter winners and improved experience on both lines. The defense kept Ole Miss in games down the stretch last season but the offense failed to get the Rebels over the hump, finishing last in the SEC in scoring, total yards and passing. Progress has to start at quarterback, where juco transfer Brent Schaeffer failed to live up to expectations. In the spring, former walk-on Seth Adams rose to No. 1 on the depth chart and Schaeffer continued to struggle with inconsistency. The Rebels also need sophomore receivers Marshay Green and Dexter McCluster and tight end Robert Lane to come through in the passing game. The running game should be even better with the return of four of five offensive line starters, led by junior left tackle Michael Oher and rugged senior tailback BenJarvus Green-Ellis. Orgeron ran his own defense for the first two seasons but the demands of being a head coach led him to hire his former college line coach, SEC veteran assistant John Thompson, as defensive coordinator. Thompson inherits only six returning starters and must replace two of the SEC's best linebackers, Patrick Willis and Rory Johnson, but there are several promising young players who showed plenty of potential last season. Ends Greg Hardy and Peria Jerry and tackles Michael Garrett, Marcus Tillman and Brandon Jenkins have all shown encouraging signs, while Juco transfers Ashlee Palmer and Tony Fein should add to the depth and competition at linebacker. Cornerback Nate Banks is the secondary's only returning starter but Jamarca Sanford has returned to safety from outside linebacker and Kendrick Lewis looked good at cornerback after moving from receiver in the spring. When place kicker Joshua Shene came through as a true freshman in 2006 he filled a hole that had been deep and ugly. Now the Rebels need junior punter Rob Park to do the same thing. The Rebels haven't done much to win games in the return game but Orgeron believes that will change with McCluster and Green returning kicks.
