Season Preview:
Miami returns 15 starters overall and should improve over last year's 7-6 record. Just how many more wins the Hurricanes will have and if they contend for the conference title will depend on how much more consistency they can get out of their offense, which has been spotty in recent years. The defense in the spring looked stout as ever. Whether it is senior Kyle Wright or junior Kirby Freeman who emerges at quarterback, he will have plenty of weapons at his disposal. In addition to sophomore Javarris James at running back, freshman Graig Cooper, who spent last season in prep school after signing in February 2006, starred in the spring before missing the Orange-White game with a hand injury. Senior Charlie Jones, who started the first three games of 2006, also returns. Senior WR Darnell Jenkins, lost early in the year to a knee injury, is back at wideout along with senior Lance Leggett and sophomores Ryan Hill and Sam Shields. Four starters return in the offensive line. The big loss is TE Greg Olsen. Junior DE Calais Campbell developed into a dominating performer with 10 1/2 sacks in 2006 and anchors the front along with a returning starter, senior DT Teraz McCray. Redshirt freshman DT Josh Holmes looks to be a prominent figure in the rotation. Senior LBs Glenn Cook and Tavares Gooden are returning starters, and sophomore Daryl Sharpton, who sat out the spring to recover from shoulder surgery, junior Spencer Adkins, and sophomore Colin McCarthy make linebacker a deep position. Even with the loss of Brandon Meriweather, the Hurricanes have three players who started at least nine games returning in the secondary headed by Kenny Phillips. Miami is in the market for both a punter and place-kicker with the departures of Brian Monroe and Jon Peattie. Redshirt freshman Matt Bosher could handle both responsibilities. The Hurricanes look set in the return game with such prospects as Bruce Johnson, Darnell Jenkins, Chavez Grant, and Ryan Hill available to handle both kickoffs and punts.
