Season Preview:
The lack of success on the road in five previous seasons under coach Mark Mangino makes it difficult to tab Kansas as even a darkhorse. The Jayhawks also have considerable strides to make -- both lines are thin -- before being labeled a serious challenger in the Big 12 North. While the battle between incumbent QB Kerry Meier and upstart Todd Reesing drew much attention throughout the spring, it was still hard to tell whether Kansas developing any game-breaking receivers. Under new offensive coordinator Ed Warinner, the Jayhawks want to look downfield more, though the lack of a serious deep threat forces them to look at Aqib Talib, an All-America candidate at cornerback, as an occasional offensive weapon. A year ago the Jayhawks thought they found a solution at cornerback by signing a Juco transfer. When that plan went bust, they turned to true freshman Anthony Webb. Now, after Kansas ranked last nationally in pass defense, Webb has been replaced by another newcomer from the Juco ranks, Kendrick Harper. If Harper holds up, Kansas has a lockdown corner on the other side in Talib. Improvement on pass defense is imperative. With two seniors, P Kyle Tucker and PK Scott Webb, handling the kicking duties, the Jayhawks have reliable veterans. One of the Jayhawks' long-standing strengths under Mangino is in kickoff coverage, which will be even more important this season with the spot moved back to the 30-yard line.
