Season Preview:
If the Hawkeyes can show the same work ethic that produced a competitive game against Texas in the Alamo Bowl, instead of the lackluster and sloppy (minus-11 turnover margin) effort that led to losses against Indiana, Northwestern and Minnesota during a dark cloud of a second half of last season, Iowa can be on the way to a seventh straight bowl appearance. The Hawkeyes catch a break with the schedule, which doesn't include Ohio State or Michigan. With an inexperienced offensive line and a very young receiving corps, it's up to RBs Albert Young and Damian Sims to take pressure off of QB Jake Christensen. Young moves the chains (2,205 rushing yards in two seasons) and Sims provides big-play fireworks. The strength of this unit is an outstanding line. The front four returns intact but will have a new coach after Ron Aiken took the same position with the Arizona Cardinals and was replaced by Rick Kaczenski. Concerns include little depth at linebacker and the lack of experience at both safety slots. Freshman Ryan Donahue, a high school All-American, replaces P Andy Fenstermaker. Sophomore Austin Signor handled most of the kickoff duties last year and made 2 of 2 on field goals and 5 of 5 extra points. Junior Andy Brodell will return punts and junior Shonn Greene and Young will share kick return duties. This unit will be under the microscope after finishing sixth in the Big Ten in 2006 in net punting, eighth in kickoff coverage and 10th in punt returns.
