Season Preview:
The days of woeful football seem to be in the past. Indiana is hardly a national power, but the Hoosiers might finally be ready to compete in the Big Ten. QB Kellen Lewis is a big-play threat every time he touches the ball. WR James Hardy is one of the biggest and best in the country. Now if only Indiana could settle on a running back with Marcus Thigpen, Demetrius McCray and Josiah Sears battling for the No. 1 role. Amazingly, the top 16 tacklers from last year all return. That's what happens when a coach dedicates to rebuilding the program through playing freshmen and sophomores. Now perhaps that experience will pay off. Indiana was dreadful against the run last year (174 yards per game) and must improve. That begins with linemen like Greg Brown (42 tackles, 5 1/2 tackles for losses) and Kenny Kendal (30 tackles, 5 1/2 tackles for losses). The return game was a strength for IU last year and should be again. Marcus Thigpen returned three kickoffs for touchdowns last year and averaged over 30 yards per return. Tracy Porter even returned a punt for a touchdown. Tyson Beattie can't have two punts blocked again and kicker Austin Starr made seven straight field goals last year before missing his final kick in the last game against Purdue. Still, Starr was 12 of 15 on field goals.
