Season Preview:
No one expected Colorado to crumble so completely in Dan Hawkins' first year as coach. The persistent question concerning the Buffaloes now is whether the slide to 2-10 was a fluke, or is this program feeling the effects of sins committed under former coach Gary Barnett. The meager Big 12 North at least offers an opportunity for a quick recovery. The problems Colorado encountered through the air last season were reflected by one observation by offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich. "No one's surprised by a completion anymore," Helfrich said this spring. The Buffs ranked 116th nationally last season in passing, averaging 118.5 yards per game. That's bound to improve, but there's a long way to go to make this offense competitive. The Colorado staff feels the defense is beginning to show toughness and spirit it needs, with LB Jordon Dizon emerging as the unit's leader. A chief concern is finding guys who can effectively cover as much ground as departed LB Thaddaeus Washington and DE Abraham Wright. Losing PK Mason Crosby is a void no team can fill. The range Crosby exhibited, as well as his .750 accuracy on field goals, made him a freak. The Buffs can only hope that his replacement, senior Kevin Eberhart, is solid from reasonable distances. But CU definitely lost its top scoring threat in Crosby.
