Stadium:
Memorial Stadium-ca
Now more than 80 seasons after its 1923 opening, the setting of Memorial Stadium remains one of the most breathtaking sights in all of college athletics. The plush wall of pine trees in the Berkeley Hills to the east is contrasted by a panoramic view of the San Francisco Bay and three bridges to the west. Designed by world-renowned architect John Galen Howard and co-designers G.F. Buckingham and E.E. Carpenter, the stadium is a tribute to their architectural talents, skills that were years ahead of their time. Fans who attend games today still marvel at the beauty of the structure, modeled after the Colosseum in Rome, and comment about the easy viewing for spectators from all angles within the stadium.

Season Preview:
California has to find answers defensively, with only five defensive starters returning. That creates added pressure on the offense to score in bunches, at least in the early going. The Bears should be able to score with anybody to stay in every game. But if the defense emerges, watch out, as a possible Pac-10 contender could be found in Berkeley. As long as QB Nate Longshore and receiver DeSean Jackson continue to hook up and the team has its health, the offense is a given. Cal relied on Marshawn Lynch in crunch time. The Bears will rely less on the tailback position and more on Longshore. He threw for 3,021 yards and 24 touchdowns in his first full season as Cal's starter. Look for him to increase his output and find All-Pac-10 WR DeSean Jackson frequently. Justin Forsett rushing for nearly 1,500 yards in two seasons eases the pain of Lynch leaving for the NFL. There is some question as to how the Bears will deal with losses at linebacker and CB Daymeion Hughes' departure. Redshirt freshman Derrick Hill brings a great deal of athleticism to the front line, and makes the transition easier for a unit of linebackers trying to replace Desmond Bishop's 126 tackles. That is asking a lot. Three starters coming back in the secondary is huge, but the Bears don't have a defensive back on the same level as Hughes. Jackson returned four punts for touchdowns last season, leading the nation at 18.2-yard average per return. P Andrew Larson returns after averaging 42.6 yards per kick, but in the spring finale three of his six punt attempts were blocked, and one was a shank. PK Tom Schneider is as reliable as they come, making 15 of 20 attempts a year ago.
