Season Preview:
Army played a murderous schedule last season under Bobby Ross, seemingly getting on a plane for a flight from New York State to the southwest every week or so. The schedule has eased a bit for new coach Stan Brock, a Ross assistant who got the job when Ross retired in January. The Black Knights lived through a terrible run of injuries last year and need to stay healthy to even have a chance against most of their bigger and stronger opponents. Brock left spring ball without naming a starting quarterback. David Pevoto closed the gap on sophomore-to-be Carson Williams, but the battle will continue through the summer and fall. The Black Knights went through most of spring camp without top returning runners Wesley McMahand and Tony Moore, but Patrick Mealy, who was at the Army prep school last year, could emerge as No. 1. An early look at the offense of new coordinator Tim Walsh showed it to be very similar to last year's pro-style play-calling. Ross spent much of his time at his weekly 2006 media conferences talking about who was actually able to play for his battered defense. He and his staff were challenged to keep a competitive team on the field and out of the trainer's room. DE Cameron Craig is gone, but this should be a strong group headed by a defensive line that picked up Iowa transfer Ted Bentler and S Caleb Campbell. The Black Knights broke spring camp with P Owen Tolson listed first on the depth chart at punter and kicker, with the expectation that he'd also handle kickoffs. But Brock doesn't want Tolson to pull triple-duty and continued to look for a kicker. As of the end of spring, Army doesn't have anyone who has ever kicked in a college game.
